I’m Tian Tian, and it’s not a typo. Friends in China refer to me as Xiao Tian, the same logic as Jack and Jackie. If you read this part, it’s fine to call me Tian. Being mononymous is pretty dope.
After graduating from Hunan University with a bachelor’s degree in English, I ventured into the mysterious jungle of many industries, and finally settled as a magazine writer, writing for GQ, Vogue, Tatler, Dazed, RADII, Modern Weekly, and many more. Currently, I am back in the ivory tower doing a master’s program in English and Digital Humanities at the University of Basel in Switzerland.
This is my website with a focus on philosophical and literary writing, as well as essays and reviews on cultural products. Living in both the East and the West also enables me to be an observer of two disparate cultures, which is something I also want to touch on. Everybody lives only once, but the fact that we are talking, writing, and producing animals grants us the privilege of living others’ lives and acquiring their experiences. Consequently, I hope this site can be a nexus of people through various communicative productions: texts, music, films, etc.
I once tried to prioritize English writing with a view to reaching a larger audience, but quickly realized the uncanny power of my mother tongue: I can write effortlessly without much pondering on words. It’s my built-in function. Thus I decided to treat both languages in equal measure and exploit the potentials of both. The aspiration thereof is to be closer to the referent with the help of a neat instrument.
I have a dream, that we will be able to get closer to each other when language gets closer to our minds. We are lucky (though confused) enough to be thrown into this world together, so why not stay connected and see what we can achieve?
